Although bartelkeite was approved in 1979, to date (September 2023) it has been reported only from the type locality.

Localities

At the type locality, the Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Oshikoto Region, Namibia, bartelkeite occurs as a very rare mineral in cavities in oxidised primary germanium ore from a dolostone-hosted hydrothermal polymetallic ore deposit. Associated minerals include germanite, reniérite, tennantite and galena (HOM).
