Lüneburgite is found in clays with evaporite minerals such as halite, sylvite and polyhalite, and has also been found in guano deposits (Mindat).

At the type Locality, Volgershall, Lüneburg, Lüneburg District, Lower Saxony, Germany, lüneburgite occurs in gypsum-bearing marl, associated with gypsum and boracite (Mindat).

At the Rudnik Magnezita Mine, Bela Stena, Baljevac na Ibru, Jarandol Basin, Raška, Raška District, Central Serbia, lüneburgite is associated with colemanite, howlite, searlesite, magnesite and dolomite (HOM).
