Environments
Meta-alunogen is an uncommon mineral formed by dehydration of
alunogen, hence the "meta" prefix; it is found in sulphate-rich
hydrothermal deposits and geothermal fields. Associated minerals include
alunogen, pickeringite,
halotrichite, mirabilite,
kalinite and gypsum
(HOM).
Localities
At the type locality, Francisco de Vergara, Oficina María Elena, María Elena, Tocopilla Province, Antofagasta, Chile,
alunogen occurs with
pickeringite in veins in altered
andesite; where exposed, the
alunogen dehydrates readily to meta-alunogen. Associated minerals
include pickeringite,
mirabilite, kalinite,
halotrichite, gypsum and
alunogen
(AM 28.61-62, Mindat).
