Stercorite occurs in bird and bat guano deposits (Webmin); hence its name, "stercorite", from the Latin "stercus", meaning dung.

At the Petrogale Cave, Madura Roadhouse, Dundas Shire, Western Australia, stercorite is associated with biphosphammite (HOM).

At the type locality, Ichaboe Island, ǃNamiǂNûs Constituency, ǁKaras Region, Namibia, stercorite is associated with struvite (HOM).
