Bakakinite is a new mineral, approved in 2022 and to date (November 2023) reported only from the
type locality.
Localities
At the type locality, the Arsenatnaya fumarole, Second scoria cone, Northern Breakthrough, Great Fissure
eruption, Tolbachik Volcanic field, Milkovsky District, Kamchatka Krai, Russia, bakakinite was found in
high-temperature (not lower than 500°C) exhalations. It is associated with
anhydrite, svabite,
pliniusite, schäferite,
berzeliite, diopside,
hematite, powellite,
baryte, fluorapatite,
calciojohillerite,
ludwigite,
magnesioferrite,
anorthite, titanite and
esseneite. Bakakinite forms flattened crystals up to
30 × 5 μm, typically distorted. The mineral is transparent, colourless or pale yellow, with strong vitreous
lustre
