Clinosulphur is stable above 95.39°C, and metastable at room temperature. It is commonly found as pale yellow needles around low-temperature fumaroles with gas temperatures above 96°C (Mindat).

The type locality is La Fossa crater, Vulcano Island, Lipari, Eolie Islands, Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, Italy.
