Coquimbite typically is a secondary mineral in the oxidised portions of weathering iron sulphide deposits in arid regions; rarely in fumeroles. Associated minerals include copiapite, paracoquimbite, voltaite, szomolnokite and römerite (HOM).

The type locality is Coquimbo, Chile.
