Localities

At the type locality, the Tatehira mine, Kumaishi, Yakumo, Futami District, Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaidō Prefecture, Japan. kanoite occurs in a seam 1 to 2 cm thick and 30 cm long in pyroxmangite - cummingtonite metamorphic rock. The seam contains kanoite, spessartine, manganese-bearing cummingtonite and minor pyroxmangite; the kanoite grains are 0.1 mm in maximum size (AM 63.598-600).
