Montanite occurs as alteration product of tetradymite (HOM).

Localities

There are two co-type localities, the Highland Mining District, and Fish Creek placers, also in the Highland Mining District, Silver Bow County, Montana, USA At the type localities montanite occurs as fibrous, earthy to compact, massive material, associated with tetradymite and bismuthinite (Mindat).

In specimens from the Upper dumps, North Star Mine, Mammoth, Tintic Mining District, Juab County, Utah, USA, montanite replaces bodieite (CM 56.5.763–772).
