Streak: Dark grey, sometimes with reddish brown tint
Colour: Dark grey to nearly black
Solubility: Does not react with FeCl3, KOH, or hydrochloric acid. A brown film is formed with 1:1 nitric acid (AM 70.1331)
Common impurities: Minor Se may replace S

Hydrothermal environments

Petrovskaite occurs in sulphide/arsenide/selenide veins (Mindat).

Localities

At the type locality, the Maikain Au deposit, Bayanaul, Pavlodar Region, Kazakhstan, petrovskaite occurs in lower part (depth 60-65 m) of the gold deposit as fine-grained rims (10-20 mm) on native gold, and also associated with chlorargyrite (AM 70.1331).
