At the type locality, the Lucky Strike No. 2 mine, San Rafael Swell Mining District, Emery County, Utah, USA,
magnesiozippeite occurs as a secondary mineral formed at pH<5 (acid) from the oxidation of sulphides in
uranium-bearing deposits (Webmin). It is found as a rare post-mine mineral on the walls of mine tunnels,
associated with natrozippeite,
gypsum, bieberite,
cobalt-bearing
calcite and
rabbittite
(HOM).
