Localities

At the type locality, the Backofen mine, Landsberg, Obermoschel, Nordpfälzer Land, Donnersberg District, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, moschelite occurs in a sandstone-hosted mercury deposit, the iodine thought to be provided from underlying coal beds. Associated minerals include mercury, cinnabar, metacinnabar, calomel, terlinguaite, eglestonite, tetrahedrite, malachite, azurite, gypsum, aragonite, lepidocrocite, iron oxides and quartz (HOM).
