Stankeithite is a new mineral, approved in 2024 and pending publication in May 2025.

Localities

At the type locality, the Moctezuma Mine, Moctezuma, Moctezuma Municipality, Sonora, Mexico, stankeithite is a new (in 2024) analog of denningite. Denningite was also first discovered at the Moctezuma Mine and published in 1963. The Moctezuma Mine hosts epithermal quartz veins that contain gold, baryte and high tellurium concentrations. The remobilisation of tellurium has resulted in the formation of nearly 30 additional secondary tellurium minerals here, 16 of which were first discovered here. Two other minerals, bambollaite and rozhdestvenskayaite-(Zn), were also first discovered at the Moctezuma Mine (AM 110.5.827).
