Strassmannite occurs as a secondary phase on asphaltum (bitumen) found in efflorescent crusts on the surfaces of mine walls (HOM).

Localities

There are two co-type localities, Green Lizard Mine and Markey Mine, both in the Red Canyon Mining District, San Juan County, Utah, USA.

At the Red Canyon Mining District, San Juan County, Utah, USA, magnesioleydetite and strassmannite have been found. Magnesioleydetite occurs in the Markey mine and strassmannite occurs both in the Markey Mine and in the Green Lizard Mine. Both minerals are secondary phases found in efflorescent crusts on the surfaces of mine walls.
Strassmannite occurs in irregular aggregates (up to ~0.5 mm in size) of equant crystals (up to ~0.2 mm) that are transparent, light yellow–green in colour with a vitreous to greasy lustre and a nearly white streak (MM 83.3.349-360). Associated minerals include magnesioleydetite, arsenuranospathite, gypsum, metakahlerite, nováčekite and uramarsite at Markey Mine, and gypsum, halotrichite, rozenite and a Mg analogue of rietveldite at Green Lizard Mine (HOM).
