At the type locality, the Franklin Mine, Franklin Mining District, Sussex county, New Jersey, USA, hardystonite occurs in a metamorphosed zinc-manganese-iron silicate-oxide orebody (Mindat). Associated minerals include vesuvianite, apatite, franklinite, willemite, rhodonite, calcite and dolomite (HOM).
