Hydrothermal environments

Although karasugite was approved in 1993, to date (August 2026) it has been reported only from the type locality.

Localities

At the type locality, Karasug REE-Sr-Ba-Fe-fluorite deposit, Chaa-Kholsky District, Tuva, Russia, karasugite occurs as a secondary mineral formed in fissures in the oxidation zone of veins of iron ores in tectonic breccias. Associated minerals include gearksutite, tikhonenkovite, fluorite, barium-bearing celestine, limonite, hematite and quartz (HOM).
Karasugite occurs as colourless rosettes to 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.0 mm3, consisting of bladed crystals to 0.25 x 0.10 x 0.003 mm3 (Mindat).
