Formula: AgBiS2
Sulphosalt, matildite group, paramorph of schapbachite, bismuth-bearing mineral. Above 215oC a solid solution between matildite and galena is complete; below this temperature characteristic Widmanstätten structure-like textures are formed through exsolution (Mindat).
Crystal System: Trigonal
Specific gravity: 6.9 measured, 6.9 calculated
Hardness: 2½
Streak: Light grey
Colour: Iron-black to grey
Environments

Pegmatites
Hydrothermal environments

Matildite occurs in moderate to high temperature hydrothermal deposits and in pegmatites, associated with galena, pavonite, aikinite, bismuthinite, hessite, tetradymite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite and tetrahedrite (HOM).

Localities

The type locality is the Matilda mine, Morococha District, Yauli Province, Junín, Peru.
