At the type locality, Franklin, New Jersey, USA, holdenite is a secondary arsenic mineral in veinlets, on slip surfaces and as interstitial̄ fillings within a metamorphosed stratiform zinc deposit associated with franklinite, willemite, pyrochroite, baryte, kolicite, sussexite, kraisslite, zincite, sphalerite, galena, calcite and rhodochrosite.
