Zincite can be a primary mineral in metamorphic environments. It is also a secondary mineral altered from other zinc minerals in oxidised zinc-rich ore deposits, associated with zinc, sphalerite, smithsonite, hemimorphite and hausmannite (HOM).

Localities

There are two co-type localities, the Franklin mine, Franklin, and the Sterling Mine, Sterling Hill, Ogdensburg, both at the Franklin Mining District, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA. Here zincite is a primary mineral in metamorphosed zinc-manganese-iron oxide-silicate ore bodies in crystalline Franklin marble, associated with franklinite, willemite and calcite (HOM, Mindat).
