At the type locality, the Långban Mine, Långban Ore District, Filipstad, Värmland County, Sweden, pinakiolite occurs as a rare mineral in banded granular dolomite in a metamorphosed iron-manganese orebody, associated with hausmannite, tephroite, berzeliite, manganophyllite, dolomite and calcite (HOM).
